# Setting Up Card Fee Recovery

> Turn on card fee recovery in FieldPulse so each invoice shows a higher card price beside a discounted ACH or cash price your customer can choose.

> **Who uses this:** Administrators — the only role that can open Company Settings — enable FieldPulse Payments and request card fee recovery. **Availability:** Requires FieldPulse Payments, which is available to businesses located in the United States. Card fee recovery is turned on by request through [payments@fieldpulse.com](mailto:payments@fieldpulse.com).

Card fee recovery is a transparent way to recover your card processing fees by adjusting your pricing instead of adding a surcharge. You set a flat fee or percentage that is communicated to the customer upfront, and the invoice shows both the card price and the discounted cash price — so the customer sees exactly what paying by card costs and no fee is hidden.

## Overview

Card fee recovery works as dual pricing: the invoice displays two totals, and the customer chooses which one to pay.

| **Total shown** | **What it means** |
| --------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Total Card Price** | The sum of all line items plus tax, reflecting the higher price when paying by credit card. |
| **Total ACH or Cash Price** | The sum of the base price of all line items, without the passed-on fees, plus tax — the discounted option for ACH or cash. |

The card fee rate you pass on is typically **3%**. Each line item on the invoice is increased by that rate, the adjusted line items are totaled, and tax is applied to that subtotal.

Card fee recovery is built for your existing invoicing and accounting workflows in [FieldPulse Payments](https://www.fieldpulse.com/features/fieldpulse-payments) and QuickBooks, so once it is active it applies on its own — no manual adjustments, workarounds, or record-by-record editing.

## Before you begin

* Confirm **FieldPulse Payments** is enabled on your account. Card fee recovery requires it — see the [FieldPulse Payments Overview](/payments/getting-started/fieldpulse-payments).

* Check whether your account is on **FieldPulse Payments Legacy**. If it is, you upgrade to FieldPulse Payments as part of the setup below.

## Step-by-step setup

1. Go to **Company Settings**.

2. Select **Features & Plugins**.

3. On the **FieldPulse Payments** tile, select **Enable**. If your account is on **FieldPulse Payments Legacy**, select **Upgrade** instead.

4. Email [payments@fieldpulse.com](mailto:payments@fieldpulse.com) to express your interest in card fee recovery for your account.

## Settings reference

You can turn card fee recovery off for a single estimate or invoice you email or send as a link, using the **Display Card Fee Recovery** option on that record's preview.

When you process the payment on your end or on-site — over the phone or in person — the payment processor applies card fee recovery regardless of that option. There is no setting to disable it at the point of taking the payment, so adjust the total manually if you do not want the fee included.

## FAQs

### What do I need to enable card fee recovery?

You must have [FieldPulse Payments](/payments/getting-started/fieldpulse-payments) enabled on your account to use card fee recovery.

### How does card fee recovery look on an invoice?

Each line item is increased by the fee rate you pass on, typically 3%, and tax is applied to the adjusted subtotal. The customer sees both a **Total Card Price** and a **Total ACH or Cash Price** on the same invoice — by email, by text, or in person — and chooses which one to pay.

### How should I quote prices to customers?

Quote directly from the **Invoice Preview** page. You can quote the Total ACH or Cash Price ("our cash price for this job would be \$100"), or quote the higher Total Card Price ("our total price for this job is \$103, but you can get a discount if you choose to pay with ACH or cash").

### Can card fee recovery be turned off for specific records?

Only for an estimate or invoice you email or send as a link, through the **Display Card Fee Recovery** option on that record's preview. A payment you take over the phone or in person has card fee recovery applied by the payment processor regardless of that option, so adjust the total manually if you do not want the fee included.

### How does card fee recovery apply to flat-amount deposit requests?

The card fee is baked into the amount you request rather than added on top. On a \$1,000 deposit request the customer sees \$1,000 as the Total Card Price — already including roughly \$30 of card fee — with about \$970 as the base amount. When you specify an exact deposit amount, FieldPulse holds to that figure and will not charge your customer more than you asked for.

### Is dual pricing legal everywhere?

Yes. Dual pricing is a cash discount rather than a card surcharge, which makes it compliant in all 50 states. To stay compliant, advertise the card price as your standard price, show the cash discount clearly, and display both prices conspicuously at checkout.
